Ageless Warriors: Martial Arts for Adults

Sep 20, 2023 12:30PM ● By Bella Ramirez

El Pasoan Benny Benavides, who at 62 years old is the co-founder of martial arts school Xtreem Jiu-Jitsu and an El Paso Martial Arts Hall of Famer says “Martial arts, especially Jiu-jitsu, is a fantastic way for seniors to improve balance, flexibility, coordination and fitness.”

While Benny has been practicing combat sports such as boxing, wrestling, Judo and other martial arts for most of his life, he believes anyone can start at any age. He began practicing Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 46 and has since won the gold medal at the Pan American games, which was the first Pan American Games Jiu- Jitsu gold medal for any El Pasoan.

Martial arts serve as a fountain of youth, rejuvenating the body through disciplined movements and exercises. By engaging in regular training, adults can strengthen muscles and bones, stimulate their mind, combat stress, improve self confidence and make great friends.

The art of martial arts extends beyond the physical realm, stimulating the mind and fostering mental acuity. Learning various techniques and forms challenges cognitive function and memory retention, providing a refreshing mental workout. The focus and discipline required in martial arts sharpen concentration and clarity, promoting a sense of purpose and renewed mental agility.

As adults over 60 embark on their martial arts journey, they discover a powerful tool to combat stress and anxiety. The practice of mindfulness, meditation, and controlled breathing during training instills a profound sense of inner calm and emotional balance. Moreover, the camaraderie found in martial arts classes creates a supportive and uplifting community, diminishing feelings of isolation and loneliness and nurturing a positive outlook on life.

Martial arts instills a deep sense of self-confidence, empowering seniors with the knowledge and ability to protect themselves. In a world where personal safety is paramount, the practical self-defense skills acquired in martial arts become invaluable assets, fostering a sense of security and independence.

Martial arts classes are not just a place for training but a sanctuary for forging meaningful connections. As older adults come together to share their passion for martial arts, they form bonds that transcend the training space. The journey of learning and growing alongside like-minded individuals creates a sense of camaraderie and support, generating lasting friendships that enrich their lives.

Embracing the principles of martial arts, including respect, discipline, and perseverance, fuels a positive mindset. Seniors find themselves better equipped to face life's challenges with resilience and determination, embracing a mindset that embodies the spirit of an ageless warrior.

Martial arts for adults are a gateway to rediscovering vitality, mental agility, emotional balance, and self-confidence. Beyond the physical exercises lies a profound sense of community and personal growth that empowers seniors to embrace their age and celebrate the beauty of life. So, if you've ever wondered if martial arts is for you, the answer as Benny says, is a resounding "Yes!" Remember, it's never too late to become an ageless warrior!
